Defence of Borders in Military History / Défense des frontières dans l’histoire militaire is devoted to the problem of border defence as one of the key issues in military history from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. The contributors analyse various forms of securing borderlands, including systems of fortifications, networks of strongholds, lines of defensive works, as well as military and administrative mechanisms of territorial control. Particular attention is paid to borders understood not merely as static lines of division, but as zones of contact and tension between different political entities, cultures, and religions. The volume presents borders as dynamic spaces where strategic, economic, and symbolic interests intersected. The case studies demonstrate how border defence influenced the development of military architecture, state organisation, and the formation of regional and political identities. The publication offers an interdisciplinary approach, combining perspectives from military, political, and cultural history.

L’ouvrage Defence of Borders in Military History / Défense des frontières dans l’histoire militaire est consacré à la problématique de la défense des frontières comme l’un des enjeux majeurs de l’histoire militaire, du Moyen Âge à l’époque moderne. Les auteurs analysent les différentes formes de sécurisation des espaces frontaliers, telles que les systèmes de fortifications, les réseaux de places fortes, les lignes d’ouvrages défensifs, ainsi que les mécanismes militaires et administratifs de contrôle du territoire. Une attention particulière est accordée aux frontières envisagées non comme de simples lignes statiques de séparation, mais comme des zones de contact et de tension entre entités politiques, cultures et religions différentes. Le volume présente les frontières comme des espaces dynamiques, où se croisent des intérêts stratégiques, économiques et symboliques. Les études de cas montrent comment la défense des frontières a influencé le développement de l’architecture militaire, l’organisation de l’État et la formation des identités régionales et politiques. La publication adopte une approche interdisciplinaire, croisant les perspectives de l’histoire militaire, politique et culturelle.
